DVD Synopsis

Shot almost entirely on a two-and-a-half-story recreation of a full-size operating airport terminal, this romantic comedy from director Steven Spielberg revolves around an Eastern European man by the name of Viktor Navorski (Tom Hanks), whose plans of immigrating to New York were hastened by a violent coup in his home country. Unfortunately, Viktor finds himself on the wrong end of a nasty technicality while en route to America: His passport was issued from a country, which, during its upheaval, ceased to exist in an official capacity. Unauthorized to leave Kennedy Airport upon his arrival and unable to return home, Viktor finds himself exiled inside the terminal's international transit lounge. Though airport official Frank Dixon (Stanley Tucci) views Viktor as an annoying bureaucratic glitch, other airport employees -- including a beautiful flight attendant by the name of Amelia (Catherine Zeta-Jones) -- come to see him as a welcome, if unofficial, addition to their numbers. As the days stretch on into months, the terminal transforms from an intimidating atmosphere of forced assimilation into a country within itself, complete with culture, ambition, status, complex diversity, and the need for love. We enjoyed this movie and the wife stayed with it all the way through. She usually leaves the room when the four-letter gratuitous language begins. This movie had nothing offensive, which was refreshing.

This movie is fun, tender, happy, sad,and has some romance. Great family movie and date movie. I highly recommend it.

What a performance by

If you spend any amount of time in airports at all, you will never look at an airport the same after you see this movie. Tom Hanks is wonderful, funny and touching in this role. A bittersweet comedy that is sure to entertain.

"The Terminal" benifets greatly from Hank's top-knotch performance, and Spielberg's great camera shots and editing. Hanks has a way of acting, in all his roles, so that you don't feel like "Oh, here's this actor playing this character," but rather you feel like you're actually watching that character. That's just one of the things that make Hanks one of the greatest actors of recent times, and is also what will make him remembered for years to come. Catherine Zeta-Jones does a fair job with her role. The best part about her in this movie is that she isn't playing that evil, stuck-up woman she usually plays in films like "America's Sweethearts" and "Chicago." The worst part about her role is that she just doesn't get as much screen-time nor good script lines that someone of her talent probably deserves. However, she does what she can with what she is given. The supporting cast does a great job. Of course, when has Stanley Tucci failed us? Also a good performance by Kumar Pallana (Gunta). He gets a chance to spin plates and juggle in a scene, which is something he is a professional at in real life. A truly great thing about this movie is its production design and art direction. They actually built a mostly functional mini-airport to film the movie, complete with real working escalators and functioning ovens, cash registers, etc. Just remember, though a lot of the story is changed for Hollywood, this film is based on the true story of Merhan Nasseri, an Iranian refugee. In 1988, he landed at Charles de Gualle Airport near Paris and was denied entry. He had to live in in the terminal. The film may come off light-hearted and fluffy at times, but it's one of those movies made to make us feel good and smile. Do so, and you will love this movie.
