DVD Synopsis

Tod Williams served as both director and screenwriter for this drama, adapted from a portion of John Irving's novel -A Widow for One Year. Ted and Marion Cole (Jeff Bridges and Kim Basinger) are a couple whose marriage is on the verge of collapse. After their two teenage sons died in an auto accident, Marion fell into a deep depression from which she has never fully emerged. Meanwhile, Ted has drifted into repeated infidelity, his most recent mistress being the sexually ravenous Mrs. Vaughn (Mimi Rogers), and neither Ted nor Marion are willing or able to devote their full attention to their surviving daughter, Ruth (Elle Fanning). Ted, a successful author of books for children, hires Eddie (Jon Foster), a bright 16-year-old prep-school student, to help him edit his latest manuscript. But Ted is fully aware that Eddie bears a striking resemblance to one of his late sons -- and that this would have a powerful effect on Marion. Eddie quickly develops a strong attraction to his employer's beautiful wife, and Marion, torn between grief and desire, draws him into a sexual relationship that brings the family's many emotional crises to the breaking point. The Door in the Floor also features Bijou Phillips and Louis Arcella. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

The best extra on the DVD release of Tod Williams' The Door in the Floor is a 15-minute featurette in which author John Irving goes into some detail about the differences between novels and movies. While some of what he says is fairly obvious, the author does offer some nuggets of wisdom that any writer should find helpful. The film itself is presented in a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1. English and French soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1. The DVD also offers a commentary track recorded by Williams and a variety of people from his crew. He is full of praise for his actors. This is a solid release, but it should be made clear that those with an interest in reading the novel on which the film is based should do so before taking in the extra materials on this disc. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide

A lot of novel and interesting separate moments, but slow and melancholy overall.

I read the reader reviews in the New York Times before getting this DVD, and I thought they pretty much all got this movie wrong in various ways. It takes a while before you realize that the husband is hurting as much as the wife is, but just expresses it differently. It's a very sad, affecting movie, but I loved it that the director nevertheless felt free to interject scenes that were uproariously funny along the way.
