DVD Synopsis

The directorial debut of filmmaker Jared Hess, who also co-wrote the screenplay, Napoleon Dynamite is a quirky, offbeat comedy set in the small Idaho town of Preston. Jon Heder stars in the titular role, a carrot-topped oddball with a decidedly eccentric family that includes his llama-loving, dune-buggy enthusiast grandmother. The story centers on the local high school's race for class president. Using some nontraditional means, Napoleon is determined to help his pal Pedro (Efrem Ramirez) run a winning campaign and defeat popular girl Summer (Haylie Duff). Also starring The Drew Carey Show's Diedrich Bader, Napoleon Dynamite premiered at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Matthew Tobey, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

From the ashes of filmmaker Jared Hess' hilarious short film Peluca comes this tale of tots, moon boots, and one of the most unlikely screen heroes ever to step before the cameras as 20th Century Fox brings the breakout indie hit Napoleon Dynamite to DVD. Viewable in either 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen or 1.33:1 pan-and-scan, the image looks great as wood paneling and drab carpeting fill the frame with a startlingly authentic Midwestern malaise rarely captured on film. Colors are evenly balanced, and there is little evidence of digital artifacting or edge enhancement. Audio is presented in English Dolby Digital 5.1 and Spanish Dolby Digital Surround with optional English, Spanish, and French subtitles. An audio commentary with director Hess, producer Jeremy Coon, and actor Jon Heder is fairly lightweight, with the trio frequently joking and offering fun trivia about the film rather than focusing on technical details. Optional commentary is also provided on the pre-Napoleon Dynamite short film Peluca, and it's fun to see the lead character's origins in the entertaining student film. A hilarious gallery of still images highlights some of the quirky details seen all too briefly in the actual feature, and viewers are offered the opportunity to see Napoleon in action on the kickball field in a collection of deleted scenes. For those who just can't get enough, the filmmakers have taken a trip back to Preston to film "The Wedding of the Century," and viewers are offered the opportunity to join them as they reunite to film an additional scene. The cast is obviously having a great time coming together again, and the feature provides an excellent opportunity for the actors to reveal what appealed to them about the characters and the script. Napoleon Dynamite fans will certainly find much to enjoy on this fantastic 20th Century Fox release. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

I had high expectations for this movie; everyone around me seemed to love it, kept going on and on about the movie and, yes, there was the whole "Napoleon Dynamite" trend going on for quite a while. (I should have taken this as an omen).

While I do have an odd, sardonic sense of humor and am a fan of strange things -- I deeply lament the 1 hour and 35 minutes that where robbed of my life with this movie. I would rather lick soap than ever see this movie again.

This is a film that tries way too hard to try not too hard to try to be funny. Just like that sentence, the movie makes little sense and is even less entertaining.

If you're just looking for an entertaining movie to waste an hour and a half on, then this is good for you. If you were looking for a deep, touching story with intensive character development, plot twists, a meaningful message, and all that other melodrama...why the hell are you watching this then?

Personally, I like the fact that they just took actual teens to play highschoolers. It makes it look a lot less fake to me that way.

I'm not a teenager... and I loved this movie. I think the key to enjoying this movie is to be someone who doesn't take yourself too seriously. You have to have an odd sense of humor, and see the humor in the everyday. I loved Napoleon... in fact I think I may have known him when I was in high school! :-)

UPDATE: I watched it again last night. I still get chills when Napoleon starts his dance at the end. Love, love, love this movie!!!!!

You know, maybe I'm too old for this or maybe it wasn't near as good as people told me it would be. First of all - what decade are we in (lanyard key chains, cassettes, and what year was that VCR from???)? Next - BORING!!!!!! And of course, it's set in IDAHO....

I don't know, For me, it's one...no, I take that back - It's a half star (cause you have to rate something). I tell you what, I'll give it that half because of Napoleon's dance scene. But trust me, just fast forward to the last twenty minutes and be done with the whole thing.

For teens this is funny. For anyone else it is not worth the time.

I guess I just didn't get get it, or maybe you've got to be a teenager. I'm glad I can swap it for something (anything) else.

This movie is funny for some, dumb for others.
For myself, being an Idahoan... I think it is "normal!" Seriously. I have lived and done everything in this show!
I love it!
