Predator 2 is far too often treated like the bastard son of the franchise (which it can now be called after the horrendous
Alien vs. Predator), though with this fine special edition DVD release, it's possible that this underrated sequel will finally be given the love that it deserves. Upgraded from the 2003 disc, this big-action sequel has been given little in the cosmetic makeover category (the 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen image is transferred from the original), though with new 5.1 and DTS sound options and a decent amount of extras, this two-disc manages to impress without getting exhaustive. Bonus material starts with a commentary track from the director,
Stephen Hopkins, and another one with the writers of both the first and second films, Jim and
John Thomas. Both are well worth listening to, with the director's track a bit more engaging than the on-and-off-again writers' track. Extras on disc two include the all-new 35-minute documentary "The Hunters and the Hunted," a fine look back that mixes old interviews and behind-the-scenes work with new interviews with Hopkins and Stan Winston Studios vet
John Rosengrant. There are some classic moments spread throughout the feature, with extra crazy points going to
Gary Busey for acting like the madman that he is. Other extras include a large section of vintage featurettes, plus some looks at the special effects department and the weapons that were created for the amped-up sequel. Additionally, three trailers have been included, as well as four TV spots and a stills gallery. Two of the best features come near the end of the second disc, where the producers were kind enough to include both filmed and edited segments of Morton Downey Jr.'s Hard Core TV show -- a big bonus for fans of the film and quite ingenious in their own right. Those who own the previous version that hate to double-dip their DVD purchases won't be the happiest to see this version come out, but considering its content, it'll be hard for them to resist this sucker for long. ~ Jeremy Wheeler, All Movie Guide
