DVD Synopsis

A grieving woman must make a journey into her past in this psychological thriller. Telly Paretta (Julianne Moore) is a mother who is struggling to put her life back together after the unexpected death of her eight-year-old son. Telly begins seeing a therapist (Gary Sinise) who offers a startling diagnosis -- that her son never really existed, and all her memories of the child are products of her imagination. When Telly meets a man with a strangely similar story to tell about his lost child (Dominic West), she becomes convinced that her doctor is wrong, and sets out to prove the existence of her child -- and that she isn't insane. The Forgotten also features Alfre Woodard and Anthony Edwards. An alternate ending exists to this film, which has been released on DVD and purportedly does a great deal to compensate for the story's weaknesses. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

The Julianne Moore sci-fi melodrama The Forgotten comes to DVD in a fairly packed version thanks to Columbia TriStar. Included are two versions of the film, the theatrical version and an extended cut that features two deleted scenes and an alternate ending. Comparing two alternate cuts of a film is always an interesting exercise, especially when the movie was given such a lukewarm reaction upon its release. What the extended cut adds is a bit more genuine mystery and a nice emotional beat for its two stars. Additionally, the alternate ending doesn't quite take the scary road that the theatrical cut did, but it does deliver a more solid ending that doesn't feel quite as forced as the latter. Thankfully, the disc's producers have included a commentary from the director Joseph Ruben and the writer Gerald Di Pego, whose track covers everything from the inspiration for the script all the way through the story behind the reshot ending. The deleted scenes are available as a separate option and are indeed worth checking out (especially the Anthony Edwards part -- spooky!). A 20-minute making-of also sheds more light on the production, the most interesting of which concerns many of the film's shocking moments, which are detailed here by the talented FX staff. A behind-the-scenes featurette has been supplied as well, with interviews from the actors as well as on-set footage in the New York City shoot. Finally, both the teaser and theatrical previews can be found in the trailers section, along with trailers for other Sony DVDs and theatrical releases. The Forgotten has been given a stellar 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer with separate English, French, and Thai 5.1 Dolby Digital tracks to highlight the image. Well worth taking a look at for fans of the film or anyone else who was tantalized by the fine trailer. ~ Jeremy Wheeler, All Movie Guide

Has anyone noticed how a whole bunch of great movies have only 3 stars? I love this movie. I liked it because it was thought provoking to me. Yet it only has a 3 star review. I dont get it. Half the really good movies on here only have a 3 star rating. I would at least give this one a 3.5 or a 4 star review. Plus some movies that are awful in my opinion have a 4 or 5 star review. For the third time I will say... I dont get it.

This was pretty good. But once you see it, I can live without it.

This is a pretty decent film. If you want to be scared/get an adrenaline rush, this is the movie for you,
The plot itself is fairly decent. You end up guessing for most of the time, but what makes it thrilling is the shock effect. There are a lot of surprises in it which make you jump suddenly.

I will admit, once you have seen it you probably won't be as thrilled the second time through. But it is worth the credit to watch once.

This is a pretty good mystery/thriller. Forgettable performances and not interesting enough to warrant multiple viewings, imo.
