Amy Heckerling's adaptation of Cameron Crowe's -Fast Times at Ridgemont High is often considered one of the finest films of a disreputable genre (the teen sex comedy), and kick-started the careers of many future stars. The center of this ensemble film is Jennifer Jason Leigh as Stacy Hamilton. She is a young, innocent high-school student who, as the film opens, is asking for advice from her friend, the sexually outspoken Linda Barrett (Phoebe Cates). Stacy takes a liking to nebbish Mark Ratner (Brian Backer), but he is too afraid to make a move even after Stacy all but throws herself at him. She eventually hooks up with Mark's more confident best friend, Mike Damone (Robert Romanus). When not concerning itself with these four characters, the film spends time with stoned surfer dude Jeff Spicoli (Sean Penn) and his ongoing feud with history teacher Mr. Hand (Ray Walston). Fast Times at Ridgemont High, a blueprint for the modern teen movie genre, gets a DVD release packed solid with bonus material that celebrates the movie in most excellent ways. For starters, the commentary of director Amy Heckerling and writer Cameron Crowe is a joy; they joke and reminisce their way through the movie in a manner proving their mutual admiration. Heckerling and Crowe dole out nuggets about discovering future stars Sean Penn, Eric Stoltz, and Phoebe Cates, about making the set oversized so the actors would look younger, and about battling the studio over issues such as music and sexual content. The "Reliving Our Fast Times Documentary" covers similar territory, drawing from interviews with Heckerling, Penn, the casting agent, the producers and many more associated with the production. Also included are the theatrical trailer, extensive cast crew notes and unusual features such as a video map of Ridgemont High hangouts and a Music Highlights menu, which allows the viewer to cue scenes by song track. The movie is presented in Anamorphic widescreen with Dolby Digital 2.0 mono sound.
