DVD Synopsis

Patrick Marber's acclaimed stage drama about the romantic interactions of four people has been given a reverent screen adaptation by director and producer Mike Nichols. Dan (Jude Law) is a writer in London who wants to finish a novel, but in the meantime supports himself by writing obituaries. One day he chances upon Alice (Natalie Portman), a beautiful young American expatriate, working as a stripper, when he sees her get hit by a car. Alice immediately falls for Dan, and gives him her love without reservation. Dan is initially enchanted with Alice, and returns her affection, but while she inspires him to write his novel (based on her life), her neediness begins to wear on him. Anna (Julia Roberts) is a photographer who is hired to take a portrait of Dan for the dust jacket of his book; Dan is attracted to her easy confidence, and while the two of them flirt, Anna soon (inadvertently through Dan's playful machinations) meets Larry (Clive Owen), a dermatologist, and marries him. Dan can't get Anna out of his mind even though she's married, and the two become lovers, but Dan is frustrated by the fact that Anna is reluctant to leave Larry for him. Patrick Marber wrote the screenplay for this adaptation of Closer; it was the playwright's first feature-film credit. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

Mike Nichols' award-winning adaptation of Patrick Marber's emotionally lacerating play Closer arrives on DVD in the Superbit format. This type of disc maximizes the amount of memory used to recreate the film's image and sound at the expense of many extras. The 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen image is state-of-the-art, and the English 5.1 Dolby Digital Soundtrack (as well as the English DTS soundtrack and the French Dolby Surround soundtrack) boasts excellent fidelity even though this talk-heavy film does not exactly require the most extensive use of the sound field. The only extra worthwhile extra is the music video for Damien Rice's "The Blower's Daughter," a song that Nichols uses to great effect in Closer's opening and closing moments. This disc is fine, but it does leave room for a special edition sometime in the future. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide

Very good movie. Very well acted, as people I would not like.
Enjoyable!

This movie does make you think; however, do not be fooled by the notes on the cover that claim it to be "a love story for adults." The subject matter is definitely "adult," meaning you will spend 20 minutes participating in an online conversation on a "XXX looking for sex" website (with VERY realistic conversation!) and you will spend another 20 minutes watching Natalie Portman walk around mostly nude as she strips for another character, and he tells her word-for-word about her anatomy. (she's beautiful, sure, but was it THAT necessary?)

I am a movie buff, and I am not so much a prude that I cannot appreciate hard-core sex talk and sexual situations in context; however, I am not certain that this movie would have received the praise it did for the actors and screenwriting if it didn't have this shock-factor.

Let's be real, folks -- I had the twist at the end figured out nearly halfway through. This movie tries to throw you off track by keeping you uncomfortable (or entranced) by the raw sex and even rawer language about sex. If you can keep your wits about you, then the mystery ending is actually revealed to be exactly what it is -- "Elementary, my Dear Watcher."
