Editorial Review of DVD

One of a number of independent British studios who produced features for the local market in the 1940s and 50s, Ealing Studios earned a worldwide reputation for a charming series of wry, low-key comedies, and this DVD set features five of Ealing's most fondly remembered titles. The Maggie follows an American plumbing salesman who strikes a deal with a Scottish skipper to haul his merchandise to an island, only to find he's been taken for a ride in more ways than one. In Passport to Pimlico, a document is discovered that states the small British town of Pimlico is actually under the rule of Burgundy, leading many of its citizens to suddenly embrace their new national status. A pair of Welsh coal miners win a trip to London in A Run for Your Money; however, between not finding their assigned escort and getting separated in traffic, they soon find the big city to be a bit much for them. The residents of the town of Titfield decide to take over operation of their local train line when the national rail service passes them by in The Titfield Thunderbolt. And Whisky Galore follows the hilarity when the good people of Todday, a small island off the coast of Scotland which has been without alcoholic beverages for months due to wartime rationing, discover an American military ship has crashed on their coastline with a cargo of 50,000 bottles of whisky. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
