The director (Rob Cohen) and star (Vin Diesel) of the previous summer's hit The Fast and the Furious (2001) are reunited for this spy thriller billed as a next-generation James Bond adventure. Diesel stars as Xander Cage, a nihilist extreme sports enthusiast nicknamed "Triple X" because of a large tattoo covering his back and neck. Cage's illegal stunts and poor attitude (he's given to spouting dialogue such as, "Have you ever been punched in the face for talking too much?") land him in jail, where he's recruited/blackmailed into government service by the National Security Agency's Augustus Gibbons, who likes Cage for his skills and expendability. The new secret agent is assigned to infiltrate a Russian crime ring called Anarchy 99, whose access to biochemical weaponry is making the United States extremely nervous. With the help of some high-tech gadgets from weapons master Toby Lee Shavers (Michael Roof), Cage is able to make his way into Anarchy 99, where he targets the group's leader Yorgi (Marton Csokas) and falls for the organization's second-in-command, Yelena (Asia Argento). Just in time for the XXX sequel comes this new Uncensored, Unrated Director's Cut version of the original Vin Diesel actioner, straight from Sony Pictures Entertainment. Featuring what could only be called the most audacious added scene in any DVD, this edition includes "The Final Chapter: The Death of Xander," which adds up to a newly shot four-minute death scene of Diesel's character (as played by body double Khristian Lupo). Featuring a fake-looking model in busty lingerie who spouts lines like "I'm gonna f*ck you until your eyes implode!" this shameless scene finds Xander blown up at the end as bad guys come back to collect a piece of his steaming bloody scalp -- yes, for real. Extras from previous versions have been carried over, including scores of featurettes on the stunts, production, and in-depth FX shots. The commentary with director Rob Cohen has been carried over as well, though the behind-the-scenes look at the sequel is new, along with an exclusive scene from the Ice Cube shoot-'em-up. The film itself is presented in an anamorphic 2.40:1 widescreen picture and pumped up with 5.1 Dolby Digital sound. Peppered with eight additional, never-before-seen minutes, the movie is now bigger and certainly more extreme. This release is recommended for those that can't get enough of action madman Vin Diesel or for those that didn't buy any previous edition -- the rest can just rent it to see the death scene (it's just that good!). ~ Jeremy Wheeler, All Movie Guide
