In this World War II drama, Richard Widmark plays Lt. Cmdr. John Lawrence, a strict navy commander assigned to replace the popular senior officer of a group of underwater demolition divers -- better known as frogmen. Lawrence tightens the discipline of this brave but fiercely independent group of underwater warriors, winning few friends in the process. The unpopular officer proves his worth in front of his men by neutralizing a live torpedo at the risk of his own life. The principal attraction of The Frogmen is its underwater photography, which would have been twice as effective in black-and-white. Lloyd Bacon's The Frogmen (1951) is an enjoyable if not too ambitious war movie, made at a time when underwater demolition was something new in our military. The drama is well executed and the script is convincing, showing the warts (such as intra-service rivalries) of the navy men as well as their bravery. The black-and-white movie has been well transferred in full-screen (1.33:1) from a clean, crisp source, and the volume, although a little low, pumps up nicely. The movie has been given a more-than-adequate 20 chapters and comes with optional French- and Spanish-language audio tracks as well as English, French, and Spanish subtitles. The only bonus materials are a theatrical teaser that's a little vague and two somewhat over-enthusiastic original trailers. ~ Bruce Eder, All Movie Guide
