Synopsis

Good and evil battle for the future of 23rd century Earth in this visually striking big-budget science fiction epic. In the movie's prologue, which is set in 1914, scientists gather in Egypt at the site of an event that transpired centuries earlier. Aliens, it seemed, arrived to collect four stones representing the four basic elements (earth, air, fire and water) - warning their human contacts that the objects were no longer safe on Earth. A few hundred years later (in the 23rd century), a huge ball of molten lava and flame is hurtling toward Earth, and scientist-holy man Victor Cornelius (Ian Holm) declares that in order to prevent it from destroying the planet, the same four elemental stones must be combined with the fifth element, as embodied by a visitor from another world named Leeloo (Milla Jovovich). However, if the force of evil presents itself to the stones instead, the Earth will be destroyed, and an evil being named Zorg (Gary Oldman) will trigger the disaster. Despite her remarkable powers, Leeloo needs help with her mission, and she chooses her accomplice, military leader-turned-cab driver Korben Dallas (Bruce Willis), when she literally falls through the roof of his taxi. Writer and director Luc Besson began writing the script for The Fifth Element when he was only 16 years old, though he was 38 before he was able to bring it to the screen.

Editorial Review

The Fifth Element DVD is single-layered and two-sided: side A offers widescreen anamorphic viewing (2.35:1 theatrical aspect ratio) and side B standard full-screen television (1.33:1) formatting. Available audio tracks include English (Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround and Dolby Digital 5.1) and Spanish (Dolby Digital 5.1), with English and Spanish subtitles available. Sound and picture quality are superb, although the score is very loud in places; there are no special or bonus features, however. A glossy three-fold booklet offers only a one-page history of the film and the usual chapter index. ~ Craig Chalquist, All Movie Guide

Very good story of how aliens in our past , left the keys to protect us here on earth from a force they knew would come someday to destroy us.
Only one important item was missing and it would have to get here before the Ultimate Evil does. We need the Fifth Element.
Bruce willis plays futuristic taxi driver that inadvertantly meets our heroine and the action takes off...

This is a pretty good movie. It's good enough that I posted my copy and got rid of it here on the site then bought the 2 disc version. Guess what? The two disc isn't really all that much better. Now that I've watched the 2 disc version, my advice for anyone on this site is to just get this copy (The 1 disc) and use the othe credit to get yourself something else. The extra stuff isn't worth spending an extra credit in my opinion.
