Directed by Alexander Payne, Sideways follows Miles (Paul Giamatti), who is distressed about his lack of success as a novelist, and Jack (Thomas Haden Church), an equally unsuccessful actor with a rapidly approaching wedding. In a last-ditch effort to sow their wild oats, Jack and Miles take off on a final road trip to California's wine country the week prior to Jack's wedding. Both men have goals for the vacation -- Miles wants to turn Jack on to the art of wine tasting, while Jack is concerned with exploiting his last days as a bachelor -- but when the two men come across two fascinating women (Virginia Madsen and Sandra Oh), the duo is forced to examine their morality, and if maturity isn't such a depressing prospect -- at least, for one of them. ~ Tracie Cooper, All Movie Guide
Alexander Payne's Sideways arrives on DVD with a commentary track recorded by lead actors Paul Giamatti and Thomas Haden Church that goes a long way toward revealing why the film works so well. The two have a genuine rapport with each other. While their comments do not add to anyone's understanding of the film, it is a light and breezy conversation full of self-effacing jibes and warm laughs. The film itself is presented in a widescreen transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. The English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1, while Spanish and French soundtracks have been recorded in Dolby Digital Surround. Deleted scenes, a making-of-featurette, and the film's theatrical trailer round out his solid release from 20th Century Fox. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide

Sideways has a group of characters that are like your friends, flawed. You'll want to like them but they are so unlikeable and a mess that you wish you could walk away but you can't turn away from this trainwreck. Beautiful scenery coupled with great acting, and a mesmerizing disaster Sideways is a good movie.

Funny, sad, interesting film about a divorced, depressed 40-something man who treats his soon-to-be-married college roommate to a weekend in CA wine country. Perfect performances from Paul Giamatti and Virginia Madsen and a spirited Sandrah Oh. We especially loved the "expert" wine references and the exterior shots of the Solvang area.

This is the comedy story of 2 guys who go on a wine tasting trip just before one of the men is to be married. They run into all kinds of mis-steps and situations that they hadn't counted on.
