Editorial Review of DVD

The Boogeyman DVD from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is an interesting disc that sheds light upon what seems to have been a troubled production from the looks of things. First off, the movie's presentation is stellar, with an anamorphic 1.85:1 widescreen picture and 5.1 Dolby Digital sound giving life to the many spooks that litter the film. Extras can be an interesting sort depending on what film they are presented with. In Boogeyman's case, the film is ankled by a ridiculous ending that looks like it was finished in under a week. Funny, then, that the DVD comes complete with an alternate ending. There's no commentary for this scene or any of the other six deleted scenes, but one look will give you a good idea that there was obviously some confusion going on during the production over just how this sucker was going to come to a close. Adding insult to injury are the multiple animatics and visual effects progressions that populate the extra features, giving one the idea that the effects were good enough to warrant behind-the-scenes explanations (which they absolutely are not). A 35-minute making-of is also included, which, split up into two parts, gives you the idea that: A) Sam Raimi had little to do with the production and B) that director Stephen Kay doesn't make "horror movies" as much as he makes "people movies." Needless to say, many things come to light with these observations after you see the film, which in a way, makes this DVD a perfect fit for the mess that is Boogeyman. ~ Jeremy Wheeler, All Movie Guide

Meh, typical semi-entertaining but mostly boring "scary" movie. The only thing that made this movie worth watching is barry watson. The plot is kind of bland as well though.
