This high-octane chase movie, well remembered by genre fans for its hellacious stunt work and witty performances from
Susan George and
Peter Fonda in the title roles, gets a souped-up release on DVD in this edition from Anchor Bay.
Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry has been transferred to disc in letterboxed format at the widescreen aspect ratio of 1.85:1, and has also been enhanced for anamorphic play on 16x9 monitors. The transfer is pin-sharp and colorful, and the source materials are flawless; this movie probably hasn't looked this good since it hit drive-in screens in 1974. Viewers get three options for audio playback -- new high-impact stereo mixes in Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Digital Surround Stereo, as well as the original theatrical mix in Dolby Digital Mono, all of which sound crisp with lots of presence. The dialogue is in English, with closed captioning in English and no subtitles or multiple language options. Anchor Bay has loaded this disc with bonus materials, most notably a 30-minute documentary on the making of the film including new interviews with Fonda, George, and director
John Hough and plenty of inside dirt on how the incredible stunts were done. Also on board is a similarly informative commentary track from Hough, as well as trailers, television and radio spots; a gallery of still photos, biographies and filmographies for Fonda, George and Hough; and even a vintage television commercial for the 1969 Dodge Charger used in the movie (though it includes precious little footage of this hunk of mighty mopar in action). Anyone who digs '70s car chase action will get a kick out of
Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry, and this DVD release gives the pic all the power it needs. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
