Although it performed adequately at the box office, many critics saw
Double Jeopardy as too formulaic and derivative (particularly of
The Fugitive). Perhaps rather like the film itself, Paramount's DVD is adequate but nothing more. As one would expect for a recent film, the presentation of the main feature is excellent. Director
Bruce Beresford certainly uses attractive locations in the film, and New Orleans is rendered very nicely in anamorphic. The Dolby 5.1 audio track is also very good, if not outstanding. There are some special features on this DVD but only very basic ones. The original theatrical trailer is included, although since that gives away too much of the plot, a first-time viewer is probably better advised to skip it. There is also a behind-the-scenes featurette, but it runs to only around 12 minutes and includes all-too-brief interview snippets with Beresford,
Ashley Judd, and
Tommy Lee Jones.
Double Jeopardy is generally seen as only an average thriller, and this competent but unspectacular disc will probably neither improve nor damage that assessment. ~ Patrick Lee, All Movie Guide
