In 1898, celebrated author
H.G. Wells wrote an allegorical story about creatures from another planet invading London, and ended up creating one of the most enduring tales of terror in the science fiction canon. H.G. Wells' The War of the Worlds: The Real Story is a documentary which looks at the story behind Wells' book, as well as many of the better-known interpretations of the story, from
Orson Welles' infamous 1938 radio broadcast and
George Pal's Technicolor screen adventure from 1953 to
Steven Spielberg's epic-scale film version released in 2005. Accompanying this home-video release is "Mars: 100 Years of Discovery," an examination of both fact and fancy regarding our mysterious neighbors in the solar system. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
