DVD Synopsis
The megalomaniacal rise and fall of filmmaker Troy Duffy is chronicled by one-time friends and colleagues in director Mark Smith's documentary. The film takes its title from the "overnight success" that befell Duffy in 1996, when the then-bartender was signed by Miramax president Harvey Weinstein to direct his killers-on-a-mission-from-God script The Boondock Saints. Smith's cameras follow Duffy from pre-production -- when he battled with executives over casting and financing decisions -- on through to the lackluster release of the film. What's more, Duffy expected his relative cinematic success to translate over to his burgeoning rock band as well -- and the tension created by the presupposed deal caused him to alienate just about everyone involved with both projects. ~ Michael Hastings, All Movie Guide
Editorial Review of DVD
A cinematic crash course in how not to break into Hollywood, Mark Brian Smith and Tony Montana's cringe-inducing account of musician/filmmaker/egomaniac Troy Duffy's disastrous experience making The Boondock Saints arrives on DVD courtesy of ThinkFilm. Letterboxed at 1.85:1 and offering audio rendered in closed-captioned English Dolby Digital 2.0, this release offers a commendable transfer of the shot-on-video documentary and features a well-balanced audio track that is clean and clear despite the movie's ultra low-budget origins. Deleted scenes allow a brief show of self-indulgence by the band as they drink their first "rock star soda" and enjoy and gloat about their success to a waitress who seems to be auditioning for a role in their first big music video, as well as a brief script reading with Willem Dafoe. Cast and crew bios, a theatrical trailer, and previews of other ThinkFilm titles round out the special features, putting the final touches on a DVD that demands a spot on the shelf of any aspiring filmmaker. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide
