DVD Synopsis

An ordinary man with an extraordinary gift must save the planet from evil in this action-packed fantasy. Unknown to most people, the world is crowded with spirits both good and evil who walk among us in human guise. One of the few who can see these spirits is John Constantine (Keanu Reeves), but the responsibility of his vision is more than he can stand, and he tries to kill himself. Saved from death, Constantine must now atone for his actions by acting as a guardian in the middle ground between Paradise and Hell. Constantine also makes the acquaintance of Angela Dodson (Rachel Weisz), a police detective who becomes aware of his unusual gift while looking into the death of her sister; he leads her into the unknown world of the spirits and soon circumstances demand that they join forces in a desperate bid to save humanity from evil. Constantine also features Tilda Swinton, Peter Stormare, and Gavin Rossdale, the latter best known as the lead singer of the rock group Bush. Michelle Monaghan (Made of Honor) was originally in the film (cast as a half-breed demon) but director Francis Lawrence cut her scenes. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

Warner Brothers Home Entertainment releases this single-disc issue of Vertigo Comics' crass character John Constantine's big-screen debut. Containing the full-screen presentation of the film, the disc comes with a stunning 1.33:1 transfer along with Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks in both English and French. The picture quality is befitting to the unique look of the picture, which only looks better and better as time goes on. The disc not only shines with its fine presentation, but with its inclusion of 18 minutes of deleted scenes that feature an alternate ending and a cut storyline featuring Constantine and Michelle Monaghan as a demon seductress. Director Francis Lawrence provides optional commentary for the scenes, as well as a feature-length track along with producer Akiva Goldsman and screenwriters Kevin Brodbin and Frank Cappello that provides the viewer with insight on the filmmaking process of this adaptation. Add in the theatrical trailer, and you have a solid release that delivers just enough from the incredible 2-Disc Deluxe Edition to make it a worthwhile single-disc investment for those low in the pocketbooks or not interested in substantial bonus features. This film is also available in the recommended single-disc widescreen version. ~ Jeremy Wheeler, All Movie Guide

Meh. An OK movie, though I would not go out of my way to watch it again. Rachel Weisz does excellent work, as usual. Keanu does his standard wooden schtick. Peter Stormare (Fargo bad guy) as Satan was a good choice, though this isn't his best work. Shia LaBoeuf was a bit strained in his role of comic relief and mostly just forgettable.

Two things I liked the most about this movie:
1. Tilda Swinton as the androgenous and spectacular Archangel Gabriel.
2. The line about "God is like a kid with an ant farm. He doesn't really have a plan".

Other than that, the CGI is mediocre at best. Can recommend this movie for one viewing, then passing it on.
