DVD Synopsis

On the eve of her sister's wedding, suburban teenager Samantha (Molly Ringwald) suffers silently as her family forgets her birthday. Even worse, some total dork (Anthony Michael Hall) keeps propositioning her with sophomoric innuendo when she really craves romantic attention from high-school hunk Jake (Michael Schoeffling). Moving from Samantha's family home as it's invaded by outre relatives to a high-school dance where nothing seems to go her way, this bittersweet teen comedy traces the hopes and disappointments of not only Samantha, but also a host of incidental but memorable characters, from a hapless Japanese exchange student to a prom queen and a posse of barely pubescent nerds. A climactic party scene at which these various strata of young America overcome their rigid hierarchies sets the stage for resolutions both tender and torrid. ~ Brian J. Dillard, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

This DVD edition of John Hughes' coming-of-age tale is about as bare bones as DVDs get. Fans of the film won't care though, as the audio and video presentations are both perfectly suited for enjoying fare of the Molly Ringwald variety. While there is a grainy quality to some scenes, the picture quality is generally acceptable, and Sixteen Candles is not a movie known for striking visuals, so fans and casual viewers should be happy with what they get. Still, the colors could have been a bit less muted. The audio is quite good. Anthony Michael Hall's goofy bravado and Molly Ringwald's sarcastic, teen diatribes are served well by Dolby Digital. The musical soundtrack (stratospheres below the excellent song selection of Hughes' Pretty in Pink) comes off quite well, as does the score. Special features? There really aren't any, unless one considers "Scene Selections" a thrilling special feature; the "Scene Selections" menu is the main menu (it's also the only menu). Viewers do get to watch the movie in its original 1.85:1 aspect ratio, which certainly beats the pan-and-scan disaster of the frequent television broadcasts. Sixteen Candles might not be the best John Hughes film, but it's also not the worst. Longtime fans will get their money's worth in this DVD presentation. ~ Tim DiGravina, All Movie Guide
