DVD Synopsis

Issues of race and gender cause a group of strangers in Los Angeles to physically and emotionally collide in this drama from director and screenwriter Paul Haggis. Graham (Don Cheadle) is a police detective whose brother is a street criminal, and it hurts him to know his mother cares more about his ne'er-do-well brother than him. Graham's partner is Ria (Jennifer Esposito), who is also his girlfriend, though she has begun to bristle at his emotional distance, as well as his occasional insensitivity over the fact he's African-American and she's Hispanic. Rick (Brendan Fraser) is an L.A. district attorney whose wife, Jean (Sandra Bullock), makes little secret of her fear and hatred of people unlike herself. Jean's worst imaginings about people of color are confirmed when her SUV is carjacked by two African-American men -- Anthony (Chris Bridges, aka Ludacris), who dislikes white people as much as Jean hates blacks, and Peter (Larenz Tate), who is more open minded. Cameron (Terrence Howard) is a well-to-do African-American television producer with a beautiful wife, Christine (Thandie Newton). While coming home from a party, Cameron and Christine are pulled over by Officer Ryan (Matt Dillon), who subjects them to a humiliating interrogation (and her to an inappropriate search) while his new partner, Officer Hansen (Ryan Phillippe), looks on. Daniel (Michael Pena) is a hard-working locksmith and dedicated father who discovers that his looks don't lead many of his customers to trust him. And Farhad (Shaun Toub) is a Middle Eastern shopkeeper who is so constantly threatened in the wake of the 9/11 attacks that he decided he needs a gun to defend his family. Crash was the first directorial project for award-winning television and film writer Haggis. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

This movie is amazing! If you like tight, gripping character driven dramas then this movie needs to be in your collection. The way they go deep into each charatcer as their individual lives cross paths, makes for a film that evokes every emotion possible. You find yourself hating, and yet at somepoint rooting for even the most distasteful of characters. I personally love movies where there is no way I can figure out whats coming next, and this one delivers.

This movie is moving and loving and offensive all in one. At what point will you see yourself, because everyone, from every background is portrayed at some point in this movie. Will you be happy with what you see? A great interaction between characters and great scenes throughout. A great movie to watch and fall in love with!

""Crash" tells interlocking stories of whites, blacks, Latinos, Koreans, Iranians, cops and criminals, the rich and the poor, the powerful and powerless, all defined in one way or another by racism. All are victims of it, and all are guilty it. Sometimes, yes, they rise above it, although it is never that simple. Their negative impulses may be instinctive, their positive impulses may be dangerous, and who knows what the other person is thinking?" Roger Ebert

Although it received a lot of good reviews, I found I did not care for this movie. They took what would have been a good story (several, actually) and then proceeded to push it (them) into the audience's face. Everything was spelled out painfully clearly, especially the moral(s) of the story(ies). I don't particularly care to be spoon-fed how I should feel about any given situation. I prefer more subtlety. It was lacking in real artistry. In the end, and overall, it was painful to watch really. And not in a good way...

Everyone should see this movie. It really shows how our lives are connected. I can see this film being used in humanities classes at school -- maybe it already is. I liked it -- it's pretty intense though and once was enough for me!
