Mixing live action with computer animation,
Stuart Little proved to be a clever and likeable adaptation of E. B. White's children's novel, and this wonderfully lavish DVD will delight kids still further. The anamorphic widescreen transfer of the film is flawless (a separate full-screen edition is also available for some reason), reproducing with perfect balance the rather ornate look of the film.
Alan Silvestri's orchestral score is nicely rendered by the Dolby 5.1 Sound, and the dialogue is crystal clear throughout. Stuart himself (i.e.
Michael J. Fox) introduces the special features with the words, "Something for everyone," and truer words have never been spoken on a DVD menu screen. There is an absolutely mind-boggling array of extras on this disc, ranging from basics such as the original trailer, filmographies, and a 22-minute "making of" featurette to more innovative additions such as an interactive visual effects feature, a quite enjoyable question-and-answer game, and a read-along family album with optional narration by Stuart. Within the mass of conceptual art, gag reels, and music videos are six deleted scenes (available with or without commentary), of which a police lineup scene is the most amusing. Most of the supplements on this DVD are aimed at children, but the two audio commentaries are obviously included for adult consumption. The commentary by director Robert Minkoff and animation supervisor
Henry Anderson is the more accessible, but the more technically minded will also enjoy the track by
Jerome Chen and
John Dykstra, which explains the background to the film's outstanding visual effects. The only thing that could possibly have made this disc any better would have been some input from
M. Night Shyamalan, whose screenwriting credit remains the strangest aspect of
Stuart Little. In every other respect, Columbia TriStar's DVD is an absolute triumph. ~ Patrick Lee, All Movie Guide
