Edward Killy's
Nevada (1944), starring
Robert Mitchum and
Anne Jeffreys, was originally made for RKO, but is now owned by the estate of
Zane Grey (whose book was the basis for the film). It has arrived on DVD from the Grey estate by way of Lion's Gate in an enjoyable if unexceptional presentation. The full-screen (1.33-to-1) transfer was derived from a C&C Television print, in 16mm, and while it is a clean source, its limitations are revealed in some occasional scratches and some intermittent loss of detail. Still, the image is clean and bright, and the sound is crisp and loud. Otherwise, the movie has been given only four chapters, and comes appended with the same documentaries about
Zane Grey that have graced each of the other entries in this cycle of releases, 12 in all as of 2008.
Nevada, however, is easily the better of the two Mitchum vehicles in this group of movies, and worth seeing on that basis alone. ~ Bruce Eder, All Movie Guide
