DVD Synopsis

Based on Bram Stoker's classic 1897 novel, this film from Francis Ford Coppola and screenwriter James Victor Hart offers a full-blooded portrait of the immortal Transylvanian vampire. The major departure from Stoker is one of motivation as Count Dracula (Gary Oldman) is motivated more by romance than by bloodlust. He punctures the necks as a means of avenging the death of his wife in the 15th century, and when he comes to London, it is specifically to meet heroine Mina Harker (Winona Ryder), the living image of his late wife (Ryder plays a dual role, as do several of her costars). Anthony Hopkins is obsessed vampire hunter Van Helsing, while Keanu Reeves takes on the role of Jonathan Harker, and Tom Waits plays bug-eating Renfield. I love most Dracula movies. This version is superb, not only does it tell the story as it was written but the actors protray it so well.

I love this film, for one reason--Gary Oldman's portrayal of Dracula. He gives the viewers a truly multifaceted villian, a demon with a heart and the capability of love. Anthony Hopkins does a wonderful job as the somewhat unstable Van Helsing. Winona Ryder does a good job as the vulnerable and lovely Mina. I'm not sure what Keanu Reeves was doing in this film, his attempt at an English accent is quite funny. Yet, it is Oldman who shines in this film--he is wonderfully evil, yet at the same time he is heartbreaking in his quest for his long-lost love. It should also be mentioned that this film probably has the most beautiful musical score I have ever heard.
