DVD Synopsis

The origins of the Caped Crusader of Gotham City are finally brought to the big screen in this new adaptation of the perennially popular comic-book series. The young Bruce Wayne (Gus Lewis) leads a privileged life as the son of wealthy, philanthropist parents, both of whom stress their commitment to improving the lives of the citizens of crime-ridden Gotham City. After his mother and father are murdered by a mugger, however, Wayne grows into an impudent young man (Christian Bale), full of rage and bent on retribution until encouraged by his childhood sweetheart, Rachel Dawes (Katie Holmes), to search for answers beyond his own personal vendettas. Wayne eventually finds discipline in the Far East under the tutelage of Henri Ducard (Liam Neeson), a member of the mysterious League of Shadows who guides him in the study of martial arts -- and the ways in which an ordinary man can hone his senses to an almost superhuman acuity. After seven years away from Gotham, Wayne returns, determined to bring peace and safety back to the city. With the help of his faithful manservant, Alfred Pennyworth (Michael Caine), and Lucius Fox (Morgan Freeman), a scientist at his late father's corporation, Wayne develops a secret identity as Batman, a masked fighter for justice. But when a shady psychiatrist (Cillian Murphy) joins forces with the criminal underworld, Wayne realizes that putting an end to their nefarious plans will be very difficult indeed. Batman Begins also features Gary Oldman as Lt. James Gordon and Tom Wilkinson as the crime boss Carmine Falcone. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

Batman Begins makes a grand entrance to the world of DVDs with this Two-Disc Deluxe Edition. Featuring the anamorphic widescreen version of the film and a supplemental disc filled with documentaries and extra goodies, this edition knocks the socks off the regular full and widescreen single discs released the same day. Presentation-wise, it couldn't score better, though its bonus features are a bit confusing in their layout. The idea of laying out the second disc as an interactive comic book is an interesting one, but the hunt for things to click on and the grey area between what is a featurette and what is a lame character bio page is a bit off-putting. On the plus side, the content is key here and you really do get an interesting look at the immense production. From casting to filmmakers to their ungodly huge Gotham set, the clips are impressive and shine a light on a practical production that found a happy line between the computer and on-set ingenuity. Also included is a 72-page booklet that features the first Bob Kane Batman story from -Detective Comics along with a classic Denny O'Neil story and an issue from the recent -Long Halloween comic run. A fine edition that customers should flock to, Warner Bros.' Deluxe Edition of Batman Begins is a recommended release, though one that will need to be revisited in time to correctly get the kind of insight that abounds in the re-released Batman film series. ~ Jeremy Wheeler, All Movie Guide

I've been a Batman fan all of my life. I hated the '60's TV series, and the first 4 films of the big-screen movie franchise weren't much better.

THIS MOVIE (Batman Begins) is THE movie this Batman fan has wanted to see all of his life. It perfectly captures the dynamics of the motivation behind Bruce Wayne's decision to become a crime-fighter, and how he trained and otherwise prepared for that. The mood is dark, and the violence is realistic. This is not a movie Jack Nicholson's "Joker" would be welcome in, nor should it have been. If I could rate this 100/100, I would. IMHO, this is the best comic adaptation the big screen has seen - ever!
