DVD Synopsis

Al Pacino stars as Tony Montana, an exiled Cuban criminal who goes to work for Miami drug lord Robert Loggia. Montana rises to the top of Florida's crime chain, appropriating Loggia's cokehead mistress (Michelle Pfeiffer) in the process. Howard Hawks' "X Marks the Spot" motif in depicting the story line's many murders is dispensed with in the 1983 Scarface; instead, we are inundated with blood by the bucketful, especially in the now-infamous buzz saw scene. One carry-over from the original Scarface is Tony Montana's incestuous yearnings for his sister Gina (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio). The screenplay for the 1983 Scarface was written by Oliver Stone. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

Here's a perfect reason to read DVD reviews before buying a DVD. The =Scarface box states that there are no extras on this collector's edition DVD, but once viewers get to the onscreen menu, look out for an excellent making-of featurette, even better outtakes, and much more. Brian De Palma's story of the rise and fall of drug czar Tony Montana (Al Pacino) is a gripping drama that is worth more than one viewing, and the DVD is worth owning for the extras alone. The 50-minute "Making of Scarface" combines interviews with cast and crew -- including Pacino, screenwriter Oliver Stone, and De Palma -- to discuss how the project came together and its effect on audiences. It's very comprehensive and leaves viewers with a better understanding of the film. The outtakes, however, are the real gem. They're not flubbed lines, but rather different readings of six classic scenes and uncut shots of some of the more complex moments. Also included is a massive photo gallery, trailers, and production notes, and background on the original Howard Hawks-filmed version. The only thing really missing is commentary from Brian De Palma himself. One note: the 2.35:1 widescreen transfer in Dolby Digital and 5.1 Surround is good; however, it's not from a new print, which is a shame. ~ Arthur Borman, All Movie Guide
