DVD Synopsis

After a long career playing good guys, Sean Connery gets to have some fun playing a crook for a change in the romantic crime thriller Entrapment -- and he even gets to break the law with the lovely Catherine Zeta-Jones. When a priceless Rembrandt painting is stolen from a New York skyscraper in a daring and technically sophisticated robbery, ace insurance investigator Virginia "Gin" Baker (Catherine Zeta-Jones) begins looking into the matter and is soon convinced it's the work of master art thief Robert "Mac" MacDougal (Sean Connery). Gin thinks the best way to get the goods on Mac (and perhaps recover the painting) is to work her way inside his operation, so she locates him in London and, posing as a fellow art thief, offers to work as his partner. While Mac is smart enough to not accept an offer like that from just anyone, most thieves don't look as good as Gin does in a leotard, and she soon proves an able assistant in a shakedown robbery where they pinch a rare Chinese mask from a British museum. After this success, Mac agrees to join forces with Gin for what is literally the heist of the millenium -- as Midnight rolls around in Kuala Lumpur on December 31, 1999, the security computers in a major multinational banking facility will be breached for a split second as the computers roll over to a new program for Y2K. Is that long enough for Gin and Mac to nab $8 billion in bank transfers? Is 14 days long enough to prepare for a robbery of this scale? And will Mac and Gin's professional relationship pave the way for some capers in the bedroom? In addition to playing the male lead, Sean Connery also co-produced this film; the supporting cast includes Ving Rhames and Maury Chaykin. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

Sean Connery caper movies tend to be a good deal of fun, even when somewhat sloppy and thin around the edges. This film is no exception, though here it could be said that it's mainly Connery propping the thing up.
The DVD presents the movie in its widescreen glory, with an anamorphic transfer preserving the 2.35:1 aspect ratio. Colors throughout are strong and clear, though rarely vivid. The transfer is sharp and lacking any visible artifacts. Thanks to the kinds of locations and sets used, there is a tendency now and then for things to start greying out a little, but this is as much the fault of the film as anything. The Dolby 5.1 Audio has very definite presence, with a strong, clean bass, and an excellent use of environmental surround mixing, as well as directional and full surround effects. Overall, separation is excellent, and Christopher Young's somewhat generic caper-score is treated well. The main problem here seems to be the dialogue, which is very low-key and sometimes does not stand out very well. While the Dolby 2.0 Surround track loses quite a bit of separation (and thus effect), it does seem to have better dialogue balance. The French Dolby 2.0 track also has a good solid balance, as well as a good selection of voice actors and reasonably good dubbing.
The DVD extras include a somewhat breathless commentary track from director Jon Amiel, three deleted scenes, also with commentaries, cast and crew pages, production notes, theatrical trailers, the various TV spots, and a "making of" piece (which is cunningly buried with the trailers and TV spots for some reason). The extras look good, and the deleted scenes have been given anamorphic transfers. ~ Steven E. McDonald, All Movie Guide

Romualdo L. from LITTLE ROCK, AR wrote on 11/27/2008...

The May-December team up of Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta-Jones was handled delicately to suggest a relationship that goes beyond the job. The suspense during the heist is 3 stars but the techie sophistication is less than what one normally expects from a James Bond movie.
