Special effects master
Ray Harryhausen's imagination brings to life the adventure and action of Sinbad (the character, not the comedian) in
The Golden Voyage of Sinbad. Columbia has done a fair job on this 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer with only a few imperfections marring the image. While the bulk of the colors and black levels are evenly rendered, there is a slight amount of edge enhancement and grain throughout the film. Overall, this is a nice-looking picture that should please fans. The audio is presented in Dolby Digital Mono as well as Dolby Two-Channel, in English and Portuguese. Both of these soundtracks are crisp and clear of distortion, though neither is very impressive on a home theater surround system. Also included on this disc are subtitles in English, Spanish, Portuguese, Korean, Thai, and Chinese. This edition of
The Golden Voyage of Sinbad includes a few extra features, starting with three separate featurettes on the making of
Earth vs. the Flying Saucers,
Mysterious Island, and
The 3 Worlds of Gulliver. Each of these featurettes includes interviews with effects creator
Ray Harryhausen commenting on how the effects were done for each respective movie. One segment is even facilitated by director
Joe Dante (
Gremlins,
Small Soldiers). Also included on this disc is a theatrical trailer for the movie, some vintage advertising materials to look through, and some talent files on the cast and crew. All in all, this is a very nice edition that should excite fans of imaginative action everywhere. ~ Patrick Naugle, All Movie Guide
