When I originally watched this, I had no idea what it was. From the packaging, I did not get even a modest hint that this was a spoof of the Kung Fu / Martial Arts genres... So, I thought that it was just a horrid, horrid dub of a so-so movie. About 5-10 minutes in, I finally figured out it was INTENTIONALLY that bad and that it was spoofing the genre.
As long as you know that from the outset and watch it as such, it definitely has some pretty funny moments. However, it eventually tries to take itself more seriously from about midway through, and I don't know that it quite works for a hilarious spoof to suddenly switch into a slightly more sober movie. Kind of dilutes the message. Overall it was a bit of a mixed bag, I guess. From "traditional" rock and roll, to video game references, etc. It seems to throw in a little of everything, even trying for some romantic comedy.
In the end, I kind of wished it would have stuck with one genre and played it to the bone. But overall it was "okay." Worth a viewing for fans of the kung fu genre willing to see a decent spoof. I liked Shaolin Soccer better. But it wasn't as bad a Kung Phooey...
