DVD Synopsis

Set in contemporary Los Angeles as well as the Los Angeles of the 1940s, Dead Again explores a romance between two star-crossed lovers -- and the doomed passion they shared in their last lifetime. Los Angeles detective Mike Church (Kenneth Branagh) comes to the aid of mute, amnesia-victim Grace (Emma Thompson) and falls in love with her. He sets out to discover her true identity and the source of her terrible nightmares. Mike is aided in his investigation by hypnotist/furniture dealer Franklyn Madison (Derek Jacobi) who discovers that in a past life Grace was Margaret Strauss (also played by Thompson), who may have been mudered by her husband Roman (Branagh). ~ Linda Rasmussen, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

A sophisticated thriller that evokes classic Hollywood, Paramount's DVD edition of Dead Again features two separate commentary tracks -- one with director Kenneth Branagh and the other with writer Scott Frank and producer Lindsay Doran. Each commentary is insightful and diverting. Branagh walks viewers through the creative choices made in the entire film and never tires of pointing out all the contributions made by cast and crew, especially Scott Frank's. As for his part, Frank is obviously pleased that Branagh remained extremely faithful to his original script and that he used it as a template for many of his shot selections. The widescreen anamorphic transfer is clean, but not as impressive as the exceptional Dolby sound mix. A good all-around package, this DVD will be of special interest to film buffs and historians. ~ Nick Dedina, All Movie Guide
