Editorial Review of DVD

One of the most beloved exploitation efforts of the 1980s gets a worthwhile disc from Anchor Bay Entertainment. This disc of Vice Squad offers an anamorphic, letterboxed transfer that captures the nocturnal flair of John Alcott's cinematography in suitable style. The audio sticks to the film's original mono mix; music and effects occasionally overwhelm the dialogue, but this is a solid vintage soundtrack for the most part. The disc's major extra is a commentary with director Gary Sherman that is moderated by David Gregory. Sherman has a vivid memory of the shoot, particularly the many real locations used for the shoot, and Gregory gently prompts the director to get even more information. There's also a memorably bombastic theatrical trailer, a pair of amusing radio spots, and an image gallery. The package is rounded by a nice insert that comes in the DVD case; it offers excellent, informative liner notes from Richard Harland Smith that place the film in its context in exploitation film history and also offer some interesting behind-the-scenes details. One of my favorite cop flicks, is "Vice Squad"...an independent film that gained some solid buzz back in the early 80's for its no holds barred approach of the slimy street life in Los Angeles.

In the same vein of urban violent exploitation films like "Taxi Driver," "Vigilante," "Ms. 45," "Assault on Precint 13" and just about everything Charles Bronsan did in the 70s and 80s, "Vice Squad" is mostly noted for Wings Hauser's brilliant portrayal of a psycho pimp named Ramrod, whom after killing one of his hookers, is set up by a freelance hooker named Princess (Season Hubley) under the grasp of the LAPD. However, Ramrod escapes custody and goes on a relentless all night search for Princess.

The movie takes place in one night, which is pretty cool. It's a simple cop drama, but I admire the grittiness and the nastiness of the film...it tells it like it really was back then.
