DVD Synopsis

Jane Austen's perennially popular story of the game of love among the British upper classes returns to the screen in this polished film adaptation. The Bennets (Brenda Blethyn and Donald Sutherland) are the parents of five daughters near the close of the 18th century. Comfortable within their means but well short of rich, Mr. and Mrs. Bennet are looking for suitable husbands for their girls, and they are encouraged to learn that an eligible young bachelor from a wealthy family, Charles Bingley (Simon Woods), has moved into a nearby estate. Eager to see if a match can be made, the Bennetts bring their daughters Elizabeth (Keira Knightley) and Jane (Rosamund Pike) to a ball thrown by their new neighbor to see if sparks will fly. Jane seems to like Charles, and he appears to feel the same, but Elizabeth takes an immediate dislike to Darcy (Matthew MacFadyen), Charles's egocentric best friend. While Elizabeth is infatuated with military man Lt. Wickham (Rupert Friend) and finds herself courted by William Collins (Tom Hollander), a well-meaning but drab man of the cloth, fate causes Elizabeth and Darcy to frequently cross paths, and while they don't care for one another, they can't stop thinking about each other, either. Pride & Prejudice also stars Jena Malone, Judi Dench, and Penelope Wilton. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

I found every detail about this film entrancing from the musical score to the costuming to the set decoration and the way the actors and even the background performers moved through the scenes.

The story is Jane Austin's timeless improbable romance that has to buck every convention and possible jealousy not to mention the misunderstandings of the hero and heroine to be resolved. We all know it's a classic among classics. And it's possible it's been done better. But never again will you see a more beautiful film from the dimly lit country ballroom to the pond where geese take flight at the same time Lizzie is trying to fly from the social climbing clutches of her mother to the house staff of Netherfield Park closing up the house as Mr. Bingley is whisked away by his jealous and imperious sister Caroline.

Although a great deal of Austen's novel is edited out, the spirit of the story remains intact and this movie, as a result, is the crisply moving zen of Pride and Prejudice.

This is and I think always will be one of my very favorite films and I look forward to seeing what Keira Knightly will do in the future.

Although this isn't a terrible version of Jane Austen's marvelous "Pride and Prejudice,"--see the 1940 version with Greer Garson for truly awful--there are MUCH better versions available. The best by far is the 1980 BBC miniseries production starring Elizabeth Garvie and David Rintoul: all the characters act exactly as they would have during the Regency period, the costumes, hair and make-up are perfect, and the drama and performances are exquisitely subtle and true to the book.
The screenwriter and director modernized this version to the point of ridiculous: Mr. Darcy, walking out of swirling mist, uncombed modern hairstyle and shirt open to show his manly chest, straight into the arms of Elizabeth for a long, passionate kiss....Puh-leeze! And unfortunately, many of the parts were mis-cast: the incomparable Dame Judy Dench at age 73, and the wonderful Donald Sutherland at age 72, are both too old to play the part of Lady Catherine de Bourg and Mr. Bennet. There are many anachronisms in this movie, and at just over 2 hours long, there's not enough time to catch all the subtleties of Jane Austen's brilliant novel. Do yourself a favor and skip this one. Get BBC's 1980 version with Elizabeth Garvie or the 1995 version with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle instead.
