Editorial Review of DVD

This disc is a mixed bag, and a decidedly uneven production, and sometimes downright misleading. It does have a dozen cartoons, dating from the '30s through the '60s, that are mostly adapted from comic book (or comic strip) characters, though Tobor the 8th Man is a stretch and Betty Boop is only here on a technicality. The quality of the material varies considerably -- this reviewer has seen better editions of the two Max Fleischer Superman cartoons featured here, and one of the Popeye cartoons, "I Don't Scare," is fuzzy and oversaturated. These are minor complaints, however, in comparison with Winstar's grotesque audio enhancements -- mostly heavy bass punctuation under punches and explosions, and electronic oscillations where there are shots of electrical equipment at work -- which half the time don't mesh with the original audio and, when they do, add nothing to what we see. They make the viewing a chore, even for the non-purist, distracting viewers from the images in ways that the original audio tracks never did. Winstar's audio enhancements work best where they're used the least -- the best cartoon on this disc, in terms of quality and overall original production, is The Toonerville Trolley, a truly glorious Technicolor creation that is also very funny and lively, and easily stands on its own without those audio tricks. What's more, anyone who cares enough to buy this disc will probably not be thrilled to discover that the Tobor the 8th Man episode featured here isn't complete. To top it off, the histories of the various cartoon characters are rife with errors, from factual mistakes to incorrect spellings of the names of directors, and the "history" on the character of Little Audrey says less than nothing. On a positive note, the menu is very interesting and easy to maneuver, and entertaining in its own right. Still, this is a release for the truly desperate, not for the casual viewer or the serious fan. ~ Bruce Eder, All Movie Guide
