DVD Synopsis

A shy radio telescope operator named Zane Ziminski (Charlie Sheen) picks up a series of regular signals coming from space -- and deliberately pointed toward Earth. Convinced that he has discovered alien transmissions, Ziminski is first chastised and then fired by his boss (Ron Silver). Obsessed, he builds a makeshift radio telescope in his house to find out where the signals were sent. Convinced that they're intended for aliens already hidden on Earth, he tracks them to a bleak, isolated Mexican village, where he joins forces with a female scientist (Lindsey Crouse), who has suspicions of her own after witnessing an acceleration of global warming. The villagers turn out to be aliens, and the village a front for an underground alien complex. The aliens are here to "terraform" Earth and prepare it for the arrival of the rest of their race, who will die unless they leave their homeworld and colonize elsewhere. Only Ziminski can stop them. Written and directed by David N. Twohy, The Arrival is a throwback to the genre chillers of the '50s. ~ Don Kaye, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

Charlie Sheen discovers more than he bargained for in the alien encounter movie The Arrival. Artisan and Live Entertainment have done a decent job on this disc, although the 1.85:1 non-anamorphic widescreen transfer does have a few major flaws. While colors and black levels look solid overall, there is a very large amount of edge enhancement spotted during the film. This presentation of =The Arrival looks nice, but the fact that it is non-anamorphic is a shame since the resolution might have been better. Also included on this disc is a 1.33:1 full-frame presentation of the movie. The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 (in English and French) and is surprisingly very well done. Surround effects are utilized constantly, and only the smallest amount of distortion was detected in the effects. The dialogue and music is clear of any hiss or distortion. Also included on this disc are English, Spanish, and French subtitles. =The Arrival is very low on extra features, including only a teaser and theatrical trailer for the film as well as some brief cast and crew biography notes. For the right price, fans of The Arrival will be moderately pleased with this DVD edition of the film. ~ Patrick Naugle, All Movie Guide
