Controversial German director Werner Herzog helmed this cinematization of Woyzeck, playwright Georg Büchner's anti-military tale of depersonalization run amok. Utilizing the more grotesque elements of German expressionism, combined with his own sense of the outrageous, Herzog plunges us directly into the middle of his story of a soldier (Klaus Kinski) who is conditioned to be an unthinking killing machine through lab experimentation. His one vestige of humanity is his love for the beautiful Marie (Eva Mattes), but even this is corrupted when he is goaded into murdering the girl. Director Werner Herzog and infamous actor Klaus Kinski team up once again for their film adaptation of the play Woyzeck. Presented in 1.66:1 anamorphic widescreen, this is a very sharp looking transfer that features detailed black levels and crisp colors. Aside of a small amount of edge enhancement in the image once in a while, this is a very solid looking transfer. The soundtrack is presented in Dolby Digital Mono in German (with English subtitles) and sounds very nice. While a small amount of distortion pops up now and then, overall, this is a clean sound mix that should please fans. Unfortunately, fans won't be as pleased to learn that the disc's extra features are at the bare minimum -- the only supplements included on this disc are some cast and crew biographies and filmographies, production notes, and a theatrical trailer for the film. ~ Patrick Naugle, All Movie Guide
