DVD Synopsis

In Paul Verhoeven's sexual psychodrama Turkish Delight -- an adaptation of Jan Wolkers' best-selling erotic novel -- Rutger Hauer (Soldier of Orange) is Eric, an Amsterdam artist whose paintings and sculptures are all perverse. He spends his days wandering around the city and picking up young female lovers -- whom he beds and then tosses aside mercilessly -- and keeps an extensive scrapbook of mementos from his bedmates. Eric is deeply haunted, however, by a dysfunctional past relationship. He only fell in love on one occasion: with Olga (Verhoeven regular Monique Van de Ven), a mentally unstable woman dying of a brain tumor. The film received a Best Foreign Language Film Oscar nomination in 1973 and became one of the most lucrative motion pictures ever generated by the Dutch film industry. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

Director Paul Verhoeven's running commentary on the DVD of Turkish Delight is like sitting down with a filmmaker in the editing room as he explains the significance of virtually every shot in the movie. It's a film school student's dream as the controversial Verhoeven explains the time shifts, motivations, and casting decisions for this, an early feature film that became the most popular movie in the history of Danish cinema. Since the film is in Dutch and subtitled in English, the English-speaking viewer can listen to the commentary and not miss what's being said onscreen. Besides the director's commentary the widescreen (1.66:1) disc offers an agreeable enough digital transfer for such an old print -- the colors hold firmly, the grain from the filmstock isn't distracting -- and the Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono is as good as one can expect. Text bios of the director and stars, a still gallery, and the theatrical trailer are included. ~ Buzz McClain, All Movie Guide
