Before
Paul Verhoeven directed such action hits as
Robocop and
Starship Troopers, he made the 1975 drama
Keetje Tippel. Anchor Bay has done a fantastic job of cleaning up this print and making it look sparkling new. While a few spots of imperfections abound (some edge enhancement is spotted, as is a tiny bit of grain), overall this is a very nice-looking print of a film well over 25 years old. The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 1.0 Mono in Dutch and sounds just like a Mono track is supposed to sound: flat, hollow, and very unimpressive. Even though this track doesn't have much in the way of fidelity, at least the dialogue, effects, and music are clear of any distortion or hiss. Also included on this disc are English subtitles. Anchor Bay has placed a few extra features on this disc that should make fans of the film happy. To start off with, there is an audio commentary by director
Paul Verhoeven. The director seems to be very chatty and knowledgeable about the film's production and script. Also included on this disc are two theatrical trailers (one for the U.S. and one for Germany), a short still gallery composed of both color and black-and-white photos, and a detailed set of biographies for the director and two of the actors from the film. ~ Patrick Naugle, All Movie Guide
