DVD Synopsis

In the early years of the 22nd century, a medical rescue team is traveling the netherworlds of deep space, waiting to answer emergency calls aboard what amounts to an interstellar ambulance. Captain Marley (Robert Forster), pilot Vanzant (James Spader), medical officer Evers (Angela Bassett), medical technician Penalosa (Lou Diamond Phillips), paramedic Lund (Robin Tunney), and computer technician Sotomejor (Wilson Cruz) pick up a distress signal from a group of workers involved in a mining operation on a comet. But as they move in for a rescue, they discover that this isn't the mission of mercy they were expecting. They pick up Larson (Peter Facinelli), a mysterious and menacing man with a strange alien artifact, who draws the ship into the orbit of a huge star that is due to explode into a supernova at any time. Supernova had a production history that can be charitably described as "troubled." Australian filmmaker Geoffrey Wright was replaced by Walter Hill shortly before filming began. Actor Vincent D'Onofrio left the project shortly after Wright, replaced by Cruz. Hill then left the project in post-production and requested that his name be removed from the film. Francis Ford Coppola was hired to supervise a final re-cut, nearly a year after the completion of photography. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

The ill-conceived science fiction thriller Supernova comes to DVD with anamorphic widescreen and standard formats, Dolby Digital Audio, and 20 minutes of deleted scenes that were trimmed from the film to improve its continuity. The pristine sound and video only make the movie's generally sub-par dialogue, effects, and editing all the more apparent, and though the extra footage is gruesomely interesting, except for the alternate ending it's clear why it remained on the cutting room floor. Along with the by-the-numbers trailer, the disc's only other extra feature is a "collectible booklet" which is actually just a couple of pages explaining the special effects. Die-hard sci-fi fans may still want this DVD, but its presentation of Supernova probably won't appeal to anyone else. ~ Heather Phares, All Movie Guide

I don't think it was 'that bad' either. Pluses: Angela Bassett, James Spader & Robert Forster are always worth watching; the score was outstanding; the special effects were beautiful. This movie really gave me the feeling that I was in a tiny tin can somewhere in cold, cold outer space. Minus (and it's a big one): The corny plot, just another version of Ten Little Indians where the only suspense is the order which each redshirt (except they're blue) will be killed off.

The version I saw was rated R, I suppose for nudity, but it was beautifully photographed, not pornishly graphic in any way, and actually quite pretty to see. I wouldn't think it worth an R, and I don't think it's something I'd keep a kid from seeing. Overall, I thought the movie was worth watching for mood, music & Bassett, in that order. Not a keeper, perhaps, but hardly a waste of time either.

I guess I must be a "die-hard sci-fi fan". I didn't think this movie was that bad. James Spader as the no-nonsense, ex-addict reluctantly assuming command after the captain is killed. Angela Bassett - well, no deep-space rescue mission would be complete without Angela Bassett. Robin Tunney does well as the sweet but loose space tramp. I wouldn't give it five stars but for us, and you know who you are, it's worth an hour and a half.
