About as definitive a version as viewers are likely to see, at least for now. This two-DVD package includes the U.S. and U.K. cuts of the movie (using the seamless branching technique to incorporate the additional footage) in anamorphic widescreen, along with an oddball special presentation that starts the movie in black-and-white, à la
The Wizard of Oz, switching to color as soon as the Transylvanians are revealed. A running commentary is provided by
Richard O'Brien (Riff Raff, and co-writer of the play and film) and
Patricia Quinn (who played Magenta), though it is lessened by
Quinn's tendency to sail off into the ozone at every opportunity, leaving O'Brien off-kilter. Additional features include an audience participation track, audience participation prompters, a DVD-ROM section, choice of a new Dolby 5.1 mix or the original Mono mix (the new mix makes a vast difference in terms of sound, giving the music a presence not even evident on the CD releases of the albums), segments of VH1's Behind the Music, some of which are headshakingly funny in their own right, the VH1 Pop-Up Video version of "Hot Patootie," (which reveals that
Meat Loaf has suffered 18 concussions during his life), trailers, the "Rocky Horror Double Feature Video," and assorted other bits and pieces that should keep most people going for the best part of a day. It's a DVD package well worth having because it goes so far beyond the movie. It's also worth having because the folks at Fox have done a bang-up job of mastering -- the film looks good, with vibrant colors and a clear image, while even the mono soundtrack sounds quite good (though not a patch on the remix.) Even the assorted outtakes and deleted scenes look sharp and clean. For those who care, the package is THX-certified. The quality of the presentation makes it very easy to enjoy watching this film again. ~ Steven E. McDonald, All Movie Guide
