DVD Synopsis

Shot on weekends over an eight-month period with practically no budget, writer/director/producer/actor Edward Burns' first feature is a family drama centering on the tumultuous love lives of three small-town, Irish-American brothers. Burns stars as Barry, the middle child who finds himself needing a place to stay and moves in with big brother Jack (Jack Mulcahy). Despite being seemingly happily married to Molly (Connie Britton), Jack gives in to temptation and begins having a sexual affair. All the while, devout-Catholic baby brother Patrick (Mike McGlone) faces an ongoing struggle to deal with the religious leanings of the women in his life. The Brothers McMullen premiered at the 1995 Sundance Film Festival, where it was at the center of a fierce bidding war. ~ Matthew Tobey, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

Director Edward Burns looks at love and life among three Irish-Catholic brothers in The Brothers McMullen. Fox has done a very nice job on this 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen presentation (as well as an optional full frame version). Colors and fleshtones look natural and bright with only a slight amount of grain showing up in the image. Black levels look very well-rendered and even. Audio is presented in Dolby Digital 2.0 as well as Dolby Mono (in English and French). Both audio tracks sound very good, though neither utilizes any real directional effects. All aspects of the dialogue, effects, and music are clear and concise. =The Brothers McMullen is short of extra features, though it does include an insightful and funny commentary track by the director as well as a theatrical trailer for the film. ~ Patrick Naugle, All Movie Guide
