Synopsis
Trevor Moorehouse, the legendary serial killer of a remote summer camp, reappears (disguised in a white hockey mask) when a new crop of fresh-faced teenaged counselors arrives to reopen the place. It's not the smartest thing these young adults have ever done, but on their first night at the eerie camp they play a campfire game, Bloody Murder, which not only scares a few of them into a panic but creates tension within their budding romantic relationships. The next day the body count begins, as the counselors go missing only to turn up horribly mutilated later. With just about everyone else dead or missing, spry Julie (Jessica Morris) uses her computer to figure out who had the opportunity and motive -- and realizes she's next. ~ Buzz McClain, All Movie Guide
Friday the 13th gets a low-budget knockoff with the hockey-masked-killer-on-the-loose horror movie Bloody Murder. Not surprisingly, this cheap rip-off features a cheap-looking 1.33:1 full-frame transfer from Artisan. Featuring exceptionally soft colors and lots of grain, this print looks as if it was lifted directly from an old VHS copy from 1987. Audio is supplied in a Dolby Digital 2.0 mix and is only a notch above the video quality. While most of the dialogue is distortion-free, much of the music fades in and out sporadically during scene changes. The synthesizer music and shoddy effects only help to put a final nail in the coffin of a very bad audio mix. The usual trailer and cast and crew information are also included on this disc, as well as a funny commentary track by director Ralph S. Portillo ("funny" means that the director actually seems pleased with his movie). Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately, depending on how one looks at it), this commentary features many gaps of silence while the director watches his masterpiece. Fittingly, this Z-grade horror movie gets a Z-grade DVD edition as well. ~ Patrick Naugle, All Movie Guide
