This innovative DVD release of
Timecode mirrors the creative nature of this unique film. It contains two versions of the movie: the original theatrical release (version 15) and the first complete take of the film (version one). These two variations are extremely different from each other, with adjusted story lines and performances. Director
Mike Figgis does a feature-length commentary for each one, and both contain plenty of compelling insight. A highlight of this disc is the option of becoming the editor and controlling the sound levels in each square of the frame. The more compelling characters can be focused on, providing for repeated but different viewings. This DVD also includes a 19-minute video diary from Figgis that differs from the usual promotional featurettes, instead offering plenty of background information on his ideas and approach to the film. Also included are several nice DVD-ROM features, including Figgis' shooting score and links to the official web site.
=Timecode is presented in a full-frame 1.33:1 transfer to offer viewers easier access to each square. Even with this modification, watching this film on a small television will be difficult. This transfer looks excellent, especially for material shot on digital cameras. The 5.1 channel Dolby Digital audio track does a remarkable job of separating the sounds that spring from each portion of the frame. Unfortunately, version one only comes in a Dolby Surround 2.0 transfer. ~ Dan Heaton, All Movie Guide
