DVD Synopsis

A pair of sewage-truck drivers attempt to rescue the tarnished reputation of their favorite pro wrestler in this comedy from Varsity Blues director Brian Robbins. Gordie Boggs (David Arquette) and Sean Dawkins (Scott Caan) live vicariously through superstar grappler Jimmy King (Oliver Platt). But when King's manager (Joe Pantoliano), in a fit of ego, arranges to have his client dethroned to make way for the next hot property, the guys hatch a plan to force a rematch. The only problem is, their no-good hero has sunk into a black hole of self-pity and liquor. Enlisting the help of old-time trainer Sal (Martin Landau) to whip "The King" into shape, Gordie and Sean run afoul of Gordie's father, who wants his son to settle down and become a cop like him. Meanwhile, curvaceous Sasha (Rose McGowan) moves in on Gordie, but has ulterior motives. So does The King's son (Tait Smith), who's willing to put his girth to good use in order to exact revenge on his dad for abandoning him. Ready to Rumble features a large cast of real-life WCW wrestlers portraying themselves. McGowan and Arquette previously appeared together in Wes Craven's Scream. Lewis Arquette, the star's father, also appears alongside his son as he did in Scream 2. ~ Brian J. Dillard, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

The DVD of the lunk-headed wrestling comedy Ready to Rumble plays to the film's two strengths: an obsessive knowledge of WCW Monday Nitro antics and goofus, gross-out humor. The movie itself looks and sounds as good as it can, with an anamorphic, widescreen transfer and Dolby 5.1 Audio, but the extra features make seeing Ready to Rumble on DVD more entertaining than watching it in the theater. Ahmet Zappa joins stars David Arquette (Gordie) and Scott Caan (Sean) in a feature-length commentary that's easily funnier than the film's dialogue, and equally goofy behind-the-scenes footage maintains the proudly adolescent tone. "Up Close With the Nitro Girls" and interviews with WCW wrestlers provide extra fun for wrestling buffs, while the video for Bif Naked's "We're Not Gonna Take It," filmographies for the cast and director, and the theatrical trailer flesh out this unusually complete presentation of a less-than-spectacular film. While it may not appeal to all DVD collectors, fans of wrestling and dumber-than-dumb hijinks may find a lot to like here. ~ Heather Phares, All Movie Guide

Stupid? Yes. Predictable? Absolutely. Funny? Sadly, yes. Entertaining? Unfortunately so. I laughed so hard at this movie in theaters, and I still do today. This is one of my guilty pleasure movies. It was a last ditch effort by WCW to stay afloat, and it didn't work out for them. But hey, I still love the movie and the soundtrack.
