This Collector's Edition of
Black Rain delivers a nice upgrade for fans of this upscale action outing. The anamorphic, letterboxed video transfer is a gorgeous, giving
Ridley Scott's stylish work the sort of vivid colors and sharp detail that allow the visual details to really 'pop' off the screen. Audio options are also very strong, offering a new 5.1 remix and a 2.0 stereo mix. The 5.1 mix is the obvious winner, offering a rich, deep soundscape that makes strong use of
Hans Zimmer's score and delivers a nice, crisp level for the dialogue. Paramount has also added a nice complement of extras for the film's fans. First up is a series of four featurettes that cover the film's genesis and casting, the challenges of shooting a film in Japan with a multinational crew and the challenges of editing a film with such a sprawling narrative. These all contain plenty of interviews with cast and crew principals to create a well-rounded view of the filmmaking process.
Ridley Scott also contributes a feature-length commentary that offers insight into all aspects of his role as this film's director. There is some overlap between the commentary and the featurettes but there is also enough fresh material (including some stories about his prior films) to make it worth a listen for fans. To sum up, this disc offers a strong improvement on the original DVD of
Black Rain in several areas and is worth it for any serious fans of
Ridley Scott's work. ~ Craig Butler, All Movie Guide
