I have to admit that this was a very hard list to make.  I just don't find any humor in today's so called comedies.

Very Bad Things

Fargo

About Schmidt

Bubba Ho-tep

Gross Pointe Blank

Tiffany,

You definitely do not need to list recent comedies. If your favorites are from a long time ago please list them for us anyway. You may have noticed my favorite is from 1975 and the newest one I have listed is from 1988. The oldest comedy I have in my collection is "The Ghost Breakers" from 1940 with Bob Hope. It combines comedy, mystery, and an old-style horror movie in the form of a haunted house. It is actually quite good.

A tough subject, because Comedy means different things ti different people. There are also different types of Comedy. There are: Screwball, such as Bringing Up Baby, Parody, such as Airplane! There are many more, and I'm too tired to list them. But here are my 5 All Time Favorite Comedies:

Duck Soup - 1933

Bringing up Baby - 1938

Dr. Strangelove -1964

Murder He Says -1946

The General -1927

Wow.  I have so many favorites.

In Screwball Comedy catagory, in addition to these already listed (Airplaine!; Caddyshack; Groundhog Day; Young Frankenstein; Blazing Saddles; Major League; Stripes; Animal House and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels) I offer these equally unforgetable movies that never fail to hook me into watching them:

Trading Places, What About Bob?; Parenthood (with Steve Martin); Fast Times at Ridgemont High; Tootsie; The Mask;  My Favorite Martian; Liar, Liar; and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.  Nearly all my choices would be considered in bad taste by proper society, which makes them all the more hilarious.

As for romantic comedies, the ones that come to mind are:  Serenditpity; The Wedding Singer; The Wedding Planner; Ever After; Never Been Kissed; and Maid in Manhatten.

Musical Comedies:  Grease; Chicago; Oklahoma!; The King & I; Fiddler on the Roof; My Fair Lady; Rocky Horror Picture Show (eclectic tastes, huh?)

Action Comedies:  Mystery Men; Scorpion King; Evolution; Romancing the Stone; and Crocodile Dundee all I can think of for now.

A lot of comedies I don't find funny at all, but these are ones that make me laugh:

1. Naked Gun movie trilogy with Leslie Neilson (funniest stuff EVER!)

2. Mr. Bean's Holiday

3. Weekend at Bernie's

4. Airplane 2 (for some reason I find it funnier than the original Airplane, although both are great)

5. The Return of the Pink Panther

6. Home Alone (the original)

7. Spaceballs

8. The Life of Brian

9. The Great Outdoors

10. Beetlejuice

Mainly I like slapstick stuff where people fall, trip and do stupid stuff like that. And Mr. Bean does some really crazy stuff!

I once saw a foreign movie from France about a rich guy with an "automatic house" who had this poor relative come and visit him. He went to a rubber water hose factory, goofed up the machine so it was making linked sausages .... VERY FUNNY STUFF!

There was also a Japanese "horror" movie about an evil tree that was killing other trees in the area - that was VERY FUNNY too!!! All these people were running around that tree and acting stupid. Some wanted to kill it, some wanted to save it, two other guys sold it to someone for a ton of money... LOL.
