I often receive dvd's that contain the normal upc found in the system followed by a hyphen and an 80 after that. The system never recognizes the 80, but it recognizes the preceding 12 numbers by themselves.

These films tend to skimp on bonus features (no commentary tracks, no deleted scenes,no outtakes). Usually a 3 to 5 minute behind-the-scenes featurette is all we get. The case gives no distinguishing evidence that it is a promo, but I get a feeling that the dvd is an inferior version.

Does anyone know of such dvd's, and are they postable? I've been marking them received (no problems) but don't know if I should post them. I really should have asked this question last year.

Yes, you may post them. If the 12 digit UPC code on your Artwork matches the title in the database, they are legitimate to trade. You should note that even ex-rental discs may be posted if the UPC is in SwapaDVD's listings.

they are not promos as far as i know. my guess is not that they are an inferior product, just made by a company that maybe doesnt include a lot of special features. perhaps the ones you have just dont have special features either and its a random selection that happens to have that quality. Ive never noticed any difference in them, and often there are not alternate versions of the same movie, so i dont see it being an inferior product to another printing of the same dvd

This comes as a huge relief since I received a handful since last year. The panic came when I saw friend's versions without the 80 and different cover art, causing me to think bootleg. But it isn't unusual to see  a certain dvd title have multiple cover designs after a few years on the market. Thanks for your expertise that these are fine to post

...but the whole UPC is supposed to be recognized by the system to be postable.  Not the UPC with some numbers left off....I input all upcs when I receive DVDs, if it comes up no match, it's marked RWAP...

I have noticed LIONSGATE has UPCs that have the 12 digits followed by 2 smaller numbers...... I have some that end in 80 and some end in 00. ..... There are special features/bonus features on these: 031398122258 ends with 80...... 031398221838 ends with 00....... I grabbed 3 LIONSGATE DVDs off my shelf and noticed they all start with the same numbers of 031398. ..... They all match the UPC in the system.

The Team recently responded to someone's question about this, although there were no particular numbers mentioned.  Sometimes there may be an extra digit or 2 at the end of the UPC.  It is still okay to post, and it is not a RWAP.

So for now, they are officially no problem.  BUT If you have more info that might change that verdict, please write Feedback and let us know what they say.

Yea, those 2 extra digits are generally not a part of the actual upc. I have a upc scanner and it never adds those 2 digits on. I'm not sure what they are used for, but they shouldnt be added to the upc, because you cant have a upc for a dvd thats 14 numbers anyway

So we agree a UPC is 12 numbers. ...... Those extra numbers probably mean something else to the studio or distributor. .....

Yup!  cheeky

You guys made me curious.  I found several of my DVDs with extra digits, and can find no difference in them - quality, features or otherwise.  Me looking at my own personal DVDs is , of course, not an exhaustive study!
