I didn't watch many of the Classic Sci-fi movies, so I started this thread. Some recent ones I enjoyed are:

Code 46

Children of Men

Serenity

Solaris

What about you?

Children of Men, Serenity, Equilibrium, Transformers (does it count?), and something about The Island intrigues me.

Besides the Matrix series already mentioned,  I liked I Robot, Independence Day and a couple of the Star Trek movies (some are really bad, but a couple were good - First Contact and The Wrath of Khan are my favorites)

LOL. Hmm, Scarlett Johansson, perhaps? I'm teasing, The Island was interesting. I liked it, too.

Does Blade Runner count as classic, or recent? That's my favorite.

Although, all of these movies may fall into the classics category:

Aliens; Terminator 2: Judgment Day; and the Star Wars Trilogy, episodes 4, 5 & 6.

From this millennium, so definitely not a classic (yet!): Transformers, the Movie.  Love it!

I'm not really sure what qualifies a movie as "classic" . It seems to be used very subjectively.

I think of classic as the stuff from the 1950's and 60's, with the really bad special effects. Like the stuff they play on Mystery Science Theater.

Despite, or maybe because of the fact they're so corny, I also always liked:

Time Bandits

Tron

The Black Hole

Oh, yes, Time Bandits!

My wish list count just went up by one more.  :)

recent? Definitely, The Last Mimzy.  I read the original story years ago and they turned a germ of an idea into an amazing adventure.  It looks like a kids movie but small kids might be scared or not able to keep up.

I thought The Last Mimzy was a children's movie, based on the previews.  I haven't seen it, but I do have it on my WL.

American Astronaut. This wasn't a favorite, but I think this was the weirdest movie I've ever seen. It was a sureal, space-western musical. Has anyone else seen this?

I haven't seen, or heard of, American Astronaut.  A space-western musical?  I'm not sure I want to view it, but you have made me curious about the movie.

A recent sci-fi film (to me) was "Minority Report". I saw it in 2004, and it came out the same year as Solaris.

I forgot about Minority Report, although I have it on my WL.  I have to call it a favorite of mine, as well.  I like the combination of action, mixed with an intelligent plot.

For fans and I, Robot I would recommend Proyas' previous work. Dark City is great low-budget film that had great influence on The Matrix.  I didn't see the Crow (the 1994 one) but heard good things.  I like Solaris, but I can't wait to check out the original.

Some of my favorite science fiction movies are: Star Trek 2, 3, 4 and 5, Star Wars 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6, The Last Starfighter, The Fifth Element, V the Original Miniseries and V the Final Battle, Men in Black.... And I always enjoy Critters, which has a sci-fi element to it although some people may see it as horror.

I also love SeaQuest, which is a sci-fi TV series of course. And Earth 2, which was a very excellent series before it got cancelled.

I recently watched Logan's Run for the first time and thought that was very good. It's one of those interesting stories about a "perfect" Utopian society where people are killed at the age of 30.

Stranded (2001) is a good low-budget science fiction movie about a group of astronauts stranded on Mars. I think it's pretty realistic with how the crew reacts (each in their own way) and the setting looks real, too. There's no flashy explosions or anything - the movie is a drama - but there's a nice surprise towards the end. It can also be classified as a disaster movie in some ways, too. For me this movie is a keeper and I've watched it 2 times already.
