Movie Reviews

Poor picture and sound quality

"I bought this DVD for my mom who likes Anne Murray.

I have to say we were very disappointed with the quality of the DVD. Put out by some company in Germany, this region-free DVD looks like somebody just took their old VHS tape of this concert, played it on their TV and filmed it with their video camera. The film is unrestored and rather faded, the picture is pretty grainy, and worst of all, it seems that about 1" of the picture has been cut off from around all the edges of the screen. If any of you have ever watched a widescreen movie that has been "panned and scanned", this DVD also has that same kind of irritating claustrophobic quality to it, as much of the time one side of Anne Murray's face will be partially cut off on the screen. And although the DVD box boasts that this is in Dolby surround sound, the sound also has an annoying loud hiss to it.

No information is given as to where this concert took place, but since a few members of the London Symphony make a brief guest appearance, I am guessing that perhaps it took place in Great Britain (?) This is mid-70s Anne with her hair in a short tight-curl perm trying for a kind of Raggedy Anne look, and even wearing matching overalls with an embroidered Raggedy Andy on them. (The DVD cover's photo is not from this concert by the way. The el cheapo outfit putting out this DVD couldn't even get that right it seems.)

I found her backing band unfortunately make pretty cheesy arrangements of her big hits here, making this sound more like a lounge act (which I guess maybe it was?) Only Anne's back-up singer is outstanding, and makes one wonder why she never went on to become a star in her own right. She certainly had a great enough voice for it.

songs:
1. What About Me?
2. Day Tripper
3. Danny's Song
4. Real Emotion
5. Dream Lover
6. Bobbie's Song For Jesus
7. Love Song
8. Snowbird
9. You Won't See Me

The total running time is about half an hour.

I think it is a disgrace that such a big star as Anne Murray should have such poor quality versions of her concerts put out on DVD. She should demand that the company in question put out a restored version that is properly converted to DVD that will do the memory of this concert proper justice.

This poor quality product is just sad."
For the true Anne Murray fan!

"Ok, I agree partially with the other review about the quality of this DVD. DVDs are usually a tweaked up version of the vhs. Hey, I'm just glad to have this one! It's a 1975 concert, so I didn't expect the quality to be perfect and it's 10 bucks, so you can't really go wrong there. It was around 1978 or 1979 when I first went to an Anne Murray concert. During her concert, she was full of energy, lots of fun and as always a great singer and entertainer. So... just glad to add this one to my collection. If you are a die hard Anne Murray fan, you'll want to get this one also."
