Still Showstoppers!

"I really didn't like their comeback album, Beautiful World ( posted a critical review on Amazon some time ago and got bashed for it ).

The concert DVD, on the other hand, is excellent!

I don't have the disc with me while I write this, so I'll give a general impression based on what I can recall offhand.

The production is great - from the sets to the costumes to the visual effects. The choreography is fabulous, and their musical director deserves major kudos as well.

From the opening sequence leading to the first song, Reach Out, you can immediately tell that this show is going to be a huge spectacle. The guys stand at podiums below giant flags emblazoned with the Take That logo, reminiscent of a political rally ( though I'll stop short of comparing it to something Holocaust-related - don't think they'd appreciate that! ).

The next 2 hours feature recent compositions such as Beautiful World, Patience, I'd Wait For Life and Shine, interspersed with Take That classics like Relight My Fire, Sure, Pray, Everything Changes and Could It Be Magic.

While the Beautiful World studio recording came across as bland and vocally weak, I heard nothing of the sort on this DVD. Although Gary is clearly the lead singer, Mark and Howard did admirable jobs on their own solos ( e.g. Shine and Beautiful World, respectively ), and even Jason jumped in with a very competent performance of Wooden Boat ( strumming guitar with a nice string ensemble for backup ).

Other standout moments: Could It Be Magic - done slow and dramatic, with impressive stage props; Everything Changes - updated to an adult-contemporary / acoustic version, very nice indeed; Never Forget - featuring an imaginative screen as the backdrop, incorporating animation with live-action sequences; Back For Good - always a crowd-pleaser, made all the more poignant by the massive audience's enthusiastic karaoke-ing; and Shine - my personal fave from the Beautiful World album, with Mark acting as circus master.

If you crave some boy-band memories, check out It Only Takes A Minute (albeit redone with some serious exotic dancing thrown in ), and Pray - the only song that retains the original choreography from the '90s.

Yes, I used to watch TT's concerts on VHS, and caught them 'live' in Singapore just before they broke up. 10 years on, they've matured gracefully and sound even better than before. I still don't understand why their studio release pales in comparison, but IMHO, no artiste deserves a listener's respect if s/he sucks on-stage, so TT has no such deficiency to contend with.

This DVD had me beaming for 2 whole hours. Definitely good value for money. :)

Highly recommended for all TT fans, but a good gift for initiating newbies as well.

A must for Take That fans and "live concert" lovers

"I bought Take That Ultimate Tour and was so disappointed with that DVD, that I did not consider getting another Take That DVD. Then by chance I saw this show on the airplane ... It blew me away, even though it was a condensed 1 hour show. After I returned home my first priority was to get this disc. And it did not disappoint. It was 2 hours of pure magic .... elaborate sets, great lighting, and of course fantastic singing and showmanship. LOVED it."
