Movie Reviews

Great Comedy, So-So Quality
Frank Kowal III | Hollywood, CA | 04/16/2008
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Through no fault of Abbott & Costello, some of the episodes are hard to watch. It's difficult to give an accurate rating, because the problems don't lie with the programs, but the quality of a couple of them.

The Charles Laughton episode looks like it was taken from a bad videotape; there are tracking lines and the picture jumps. This episode is presented on other collections without those problems.

Also, the Lon Chaney episode is missing the Frankenstein's Monster segment, spresumably removed by today's DVD companies to not get sued by Universal Studios (who owns the rights to the likeness of the Monster). Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a DVD set that has this episode complete anyway, but just so you know it's definitely not here.

Abbott & Costello are my favorites, hands down. Hopefully someday a company will release a complete set of all their episodes."

"I selected this hastily one day thinking it was a&c's old 'sitcom' tv show. It is a collection of very old variety show episodes. a&c are never bad but watch everything else first. Highly recommend their 4-box set of movies. Excellent quality and a good value at around $15 per volume."
