The Best Live Concert DVD ever!!!!

"It's so great. I love it just as good as being over there."
A Performance Not to Be Missed Despite Flaws
J. Hudson | Euless, TX United States | 09/15/2009
(3 out of 5 stars)

"I discovered Garou's music just this summer. Between that distinctive rumbling growl of his that lodges in my solar plexus and an eclectic range of styles, his music is something I won't soon burn out on, if ever. Still, I had certain expectations of the DVD set based on every other performer's concert I've ever attended. I was so wrong.

The Good:

Five minutes into the concert video, it's clear that Garou lives to perform. He is at turns funny and sexy but rarely taking himself too seriously. The vulnerable expression of sheer joy on his face is astonishing to me. I have never seen a performer so willing to remove the facade between himself and his audience. I'm now spoiled and forever doomed to disappointment when other singers perform at me instead of drawing me into the moment with them.

The Bad:

Any criticism of this 2 DVD set is for the video editor not the performer. Garou would get ten stars! A three star rating is a must for the poorly-executed theme of a year on tour. The application of the theme crushes the actual performance. The first disc contains a concert inter-cut with various behind the scenes footage. Special effects are piled on so thickly in spots that they obscure Garou's performance and stop just short of inducing seizures. The lack of restraint in this area is the sign of an inexperienced editor playing at design with a heavy hand.

The transitions between the concert and other footage are jarring and awkwardly placed. Instead of providing a suggestion of user interactivity, it seemed as if my tv remote had been hijacked by an overly-caffeinated attention deficit teenager! A better way would have been to commit to true interactivity by making the DVD in Flash with buttons to toggle between the related clips on any given song. This would provide a much richer user experience with endless variety--well worth the trade off of viewing it on a computer.

My Recommendation:

Buy the DVD set but know what you're getting. A majority of the songs and all speaking parts are in French. It was not made for an American audience ( i.e. no English subtitles). It was quite challenging to my very rusty college French but worth it.

The bonus disc makes it all worthwhile. It contains a whole concert without the excesses of the first disc. From now on, this is the concert I will watch when I pull out this DVD set."
